Janab Kashmiri Lal Zakir Memorial Lecture at PU
The Panjab University Alumni Association, in collaboration with the Department of English and Cultural Studies, Panjab University, organised the Janab Kashmiri Lal Zakir Memorial Lecture at the Mulk Raj Anand Auditorium, Panjab University, Chandigarh. The event paid rich tribute to the literary legacy of Janab Kashmiri Lal Zakir, an eminent Urdu poet, novelist, and short story writer, whose works continue to inspire generations of readers and scholars.
Chandigarh, November 3, 2025: The Panjab University Alumni Association, in collaboration with the Department of English and Cultural Studies, Panjab University, organised the Janab Kashmiri Lal Zakir Memorial Lecture at the Mulk Raj Anand Auditorium, Panjab University, Chandigarh. The event paid rich tribute to the literary legacy of Janab Kashmiri Lal Zakir, an eminent Urdu poet, novelist, and short story writer, whose works continue to inspire generations of readers and scholars.
The lecture, titled “Ye Fasle Teri Gallion Ke: The Question of Home and Indian Muslim in Garm Hava and Mammo,” was delivered by Prof. Vivek Sachdeva, a distinguished academic and noted scholar in literature and cultural studies. The talk explored the complex themes of identity, belonging, and displacement as represented in Indian cinema, with particular reference to Garm Hava and Mammo.
Prof. Yojna Rawat, Dean of University Instruction, Panjab University, addressed and recalled her cherished interactions with Janab Zakir during her research years, highlighting his inspiring personality and humane vision.
Prof. Gurupdesh Singh, former Professor and Chairperson, Department of English, Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar, graced the occasion as the Guest of Honour. Prof. Kamlesh Mohan, former Professor and Chairperson, Department of History, Panjab University and the daughter of Janab Kashmiri Lal Zakir shared fond memories and the life journey of her father.
Prof. Deepti Gupta extended a cordial welcome to the alumni and guests, setting a gracious tone for the event.
Other distinguished people who attended the occasion included former Prof. Pushpinder Syal, and former Prof. Rana Nayar, Prof. Rumina Sethi, former Dean University Instruction (DUI); Prof. Akshay Kumar, and a good number of alumni of the department. Prof. Meenu A. Gupta, Chairperson, Department of English and Cultural Studies, Panjab University concluded the event with the vote of thanks.
The lecture witnessed enthusiastic participation from faculty members, research scholars, students, and alumni, making it a memorable and intellectually stimulating event that celebrated both literary thought and cultural reflection.
