Ludhiana, August 12, 2025: Punjab Jail Minister Laljit Singh Bhullar on Tuesday conducted a comprehensive review of the facilities being provided to inmates and undertrials in local central jail. He personally inspected key amenities, including food services, sports and medical facilities, gymnasium, bakery unit, furniture workshop, and other vocational units in the jail.
During the visit, Minister Bhullar engaged directly with inmates, listening to their concerns and grievances. He assured them of prompt redressal, emphasizing the Punjab government’s commitment to creating a rehabilitative environment within the state’s jails. “Our goal is to transform jails into true Sudhar Ghars (Reformation Homes), where inmates can reform, acquire skills, and reintegrate into mainstream society as responsible citizens upon their release,” the Minister stated.
To further enhance the rehabilitative environment, Minister Bhullar announced several initiatives aimed at improving infrastructure and opportunities within the jails. He revealed plans to allocate additional funds to strengthen vocational units such as bakery and furniture workshops here. These units provide inmates with opportunities to learn valuable skills, fostering a sense of purpose and directing their focus toward productive activities. “By expanding these units, we will empower inmates with skills that will help them secure livelihoods after their release,” Bhullar added.
Recognizing the importance of physical activity for mental and physical well-being, the Minister announced the development of new playground within the jail. This facility will provide inmates with access to sports and recreational activities, promoting a healthy lifestyle and positive engagement.
Minister Bhullar reiterated the Punjab government’s dedication to transforming jails into centers of reformation rather than mere confinement. He added that the Punjab government is committed to creating an environment where inmates can reflect, reform, and rebuild their lives.
The Minister also convened a meeting with jail officials, warders, and other personnel to address their concerns. He assured prompt action on key issues, including facilitating transfers to jails closer to employees' residences and resolving other administrative issues to enhance operational efficiency and staff welfare.
