Mohali, December 29, 2022: The Surgical Oncology Department at Ivy Hospital Mohali in collaboration with the Pathology Department has started doing sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) in early-stage breast cancer patients.

Giving information, Dr. Vijay Bansal, head onco surgery at Ivy Hospital  said that we are using methylene blue dye for nodal basin staining.

He further informed that SLNB benefits patients in terms of-accurate staging of axillary lymph node involvement, post-operative limb edema doesn't develop and chances of nerve injury are minimized and patients have better shoulder movements in post-operative course.

He said that SLNB is a procedure where a sentinel (first draining) lymph node is identified, removed, and examined microscopically during surgery to determine whether cancer cells are present. It is used in people who have already been diagnosed with cancer, he opined.

Dr. Hemkant Verma, senior consultant onco-surgery said that a negative SLNB result suggests that cancer has not yet spread to nearby lymph nodes or other organs. Whereas positive SLNB result indicates that cancer is present in the sentinel lymph node and that it may have spread to other nearby lymph nodes which are called regional lymph nodes and possibly the other organs.
