Interactive session (Roo-Ba-Roo) with renowned Punjabi storyteller Jarnail Singh (Canada)
The Literary Society of the School of Punjabi Studies, Panjab University Chandigarh, in collaboration with the Punjabi Sahitya Academy, Ludhiana, organized an interactive session (Roo-Ba-Roo) with renowned Punjabi storyteller Jarnail Singh (Canada) on Tuesday.

Chandigarh, March 4, 2025: The Literary Society of the School of Punjabi Studies, Panjab University Chandigarh, in collaboration with the Punjabi Sahitya Academy, Ludhiana, organized an interactive session (Roo-Ba-Roo) with renowned Punjabi storyteller Jarnail Singh (Canada) on Tuesday.
The event began with a welcome address by Prof. Sarabjit Singh, senior professor of the department and president of the Punjabi Sahitya Academy, Ludhiana. Introducing students to Jarnail Singh’s literary works, he emphasized how the author has broadened the scope of diasporic Punjabi literature, transcending traditional themes and incorporating global political consciousness. His stories vividly explore themes such as migration-induced stress, cultural integration, and conflict arising from displacement.
During the interactive session, Jarnail Singh shared insights into his life and literary journey, engaging in a thoughtful discussion about his storytelling process, the preparatory exercises he undertakes before writing, and his approach to character development.
In her vote of thanks, Dr. Paramjit Kaur Sidhu expressed her sincere gratitude to Jarnail Singh for his enriching interaction with students and for sharing his creative process. She also highlighted his significant contributions to Punjabi literature, particularly in the domain of diasporic narratives. Additionally, she extended special thanks to Prof. Sarabjit Singh for the invaluable support provided by the Punjabi Sahitya Academy, Ludhiana, in organizing the event.
The program concluded with the department honoring Jarnail Singh and his wife with a shawl and a Phulkari, symbolizing their appreciation and respect.
The event was graced by the presence of senior faculty members, including Prof. Uma Sethi, Prof. Akvinder Kaur Tanvi, Dr. Pawan, Dr. Sukhjeet Kaur, and Ravi Kumar. Additionally, Harjeet Kaur, Kulwant Kaur, Dr. Gurmel Singh, Harsimran Kaur, noted Punjabi ghazal poet Thamman Singh, along with a large gathering of students and researchers, attended the event.
