Inflation making life difficult for poor & middle class: Former CM Hooda

Chandigarh, March 7, 2026: Former Haryana Chief Minister and Leader of the Opposition Bhupinder Singh Hooda has taken on the government and said its failures to tackle runaway inflation is adding to the pressure on the incomes of poor and middle-class families.

He was responding to issues related to rising inflation, foreign pressure, and the Rajya Sabha elections. Talking to journalists, Hooda said inflation is continuously worsening under the BJP government. “Following petrol and diesel prices, the continuous increase in gas cylinder prices is a direct attack on the pockets of the poor and middle class. The backbreaking inflation has made life difficult for the common man,” he said.

Hooda stressed that the government should at least control the prices of essential kitchen items like gas, oil, and other food items so that people can at least eat two meals a day. Instead of doing so, increasing gas prices is like adding salt to the public's wounds.

Hooda also targeted the central government's foreign policy, raising the issue of US pressure on important decisions such as international oil imports. He said the country has been pushed in a situation where the government has to obtain certificates from other countries and is requesting a 30-day extension even for basic decisions like importing oil.

“It is shameful that despite being an independent country, we have to seek permission from another nation. This clearly shows that the deal was struck under duress and raises questions about the country's sovereignty,” he said.

In a major statement regarding the Rajya Sabha elections, Hooda clarified that Congress is certain to win the election. According to the data, one seat will go to the BJP, and the other to Congress. However, the BJP has fielded two candidates, so the BJP must decide which of its two candidates it wants to win. According to the data, only one seat will go to the BJP, and the other to Congress.
