IKGPTU JMC Department Celebrates National Press Day with Expert Lecture

Jalandhar/Kapurthala, November 16, 2025: The Department of Journalism & Mass Communication (JMC) at I.K. Gujral Punjab Technical University (IKG PTU) celebrated National Press Day with full enthusiasm. The event featured an expert guest lecture delivered by Senior Journalist of Punjabi Daily Arundeep, who is having 26 years of experience in various media. At present Arundeep is working with a Punjabi Daily as Senior Chief Sub-Editor. This program was initiated under the guidance of University's Vice-Chancellor Prof. (Dr.) Susheel Mittal.

The event began with a welcome address of Dr. Ranbir Singh, Head of the JMC Department IKGPTU main campus. Dr. Ranbir highlighted the significance of the day. He noted that November 16 marked as National Press Day, the day of the inception & operational of Press Council of India (PCI) in 1966 and set the theme for the discussion on the press’s role in a democratic setup. The celebration also included a creative showcase by students, prepared under the guidance of JMC department’s senior faculty Dr. Ekta Mahajan and Kshitij Bharat.

In his keynote address, Arundeep discussed the importance of practical journalism beyond academic theory. He spoke about the four pillars of democracy—the executive, legislature, judiciary, and the press—and the media’s specific function. Speaking on the role of the media, Sh. Arundeep stated, “The role of the press is to act as a watchdog, to keep the government in check, and to ensure its accountability (jawabdehi)”.

The lecture was followed by an interactive session, where Arundeep invited questions from the students to discuss the field in more detail. The session was attended by University’s Deputy Registrar (Public Relations) Rajneesh Sharma with faculty members of the department Dr. Ekta Mahajan, Dr. Mangla Sahni, Dr. Sanjeev Sharma, H.K. Singh, Karamveer Singh, Karan Sharma. The PhD scholars Jagdeep Walia (renowned law practitioner), Warish Malik (Journalist Hindi Daily), also joined the session.
