In recent years, the demand for makhana has increased significantly in both domestic and international markets, which has led to a substantial rise in its commercial value.

Considering the nutritional importance and growing market potential of makhana, the ICAR–Central Institute of Post-Harvest Engineering and Technology (ICAR-CIPHET), Ludhiana has developed a mechanized makhana seed collection system. The technology aims to improve harvesting efficiency by reducing manual labour and drudgery while enhancing operational capacity.

In this regard, Varun Gupta of BlackNut AgriFood Machinery Pvt. Ltd., Ambala approached the institute to obtain a license for the technology.
