Jalandhar, April 10, 2026: The I-Social Club of PCM S.D. College for Women, Jalandhar instituted under the Government of India’s ‘Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat initiative’, organised a Group Discussion on the topic ‘Portraying Kerala: Intersections of Literature and Cinema’.
The session sought to view how Kerala is envisioned across literary narratives and cinematic representations.
Students engaged in a thoughtful deliberation on Kerala as a cultural and experiential space, reflected through both written texts and visual narratives. While discussing cinematic portrayals, references were made to films such as Chemmeen, Drishyam, and Kumbalangi Nights, which, in different ways, foreground the region’s social ethos, familial structures, and evolving cultural sensibilities.
The discussion underscored how both literature and cinema depict Kerala beyond its scenic beauty, bringing into focus the complexities of everyday life, the amalgamation between tradition and modernity, and the nuanced realities of identity and community.

The role of folklore, oral traditions, and regional consciousness was also highlighted as instrumental to shaping authentic representations.
President Naresh Budhia, Senior Vice President Vinod Dada, other members of the managing committee and Principal Dr Pooja Prashar applauded the club for meaningfully contributing to the spirit of ‘Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat’ by encouraging a deeper engagement with India’s diverse cultural landscapes.
