Haryana Grapples with Power Crisis; Government Squanders Hundreds of Crores: Former CM Hooda
Former Chief Minister of Haryana and Leader of the Opposition, Bhupinder Singh Hooda said that ground reports from 17 districts of the state indicate that both urban and rural areas are experiencing daily unscheduled power cuts ranging from 3 to 14 hours as the state's power infrastructure is buckling under the strain due to the scorching heat in Haryana.
Rohtak/Chandigarh, May 22, 2026: Former Chief Minister of Haryana and Leader of the Opposition, Bhupinder Singh Hooda said that ground reports from 17 districts of the state indicate that both urban and rural areas are experiencing daily unscheduled power cuts ranging from 3 to 14 hours as the state's power infrastructure is buckling under the strain due to the scorching heat in Haryana.
“The situation has become so dire that transformers are overheating and burning out, and cables are catching fire. Thousands of complaints regarding blown fuses are reaching control rooms every day. Amidst the government's claims regarding its 'Jagmag Yojana', villages are receiving electricity for only 10 to 12 hours a day, which has, in turn, triggered a crisis regarding drinking water and irrigation,” he said.
Hooda remarked that with the onset of the summer season, the BJP government's claims have once again fallen flat, and the power supply system has ground to a halt. “Across the entire state, people are enduring power cuts lasting for several hours at a stretch. Consequently, people's businesses and livelihoods are also coming to a standstill. Today, the public is facing a multi-pronged assault from the heat, inflation, economic slowdown, and power cuts,” he stated.
“In contrast, the Congress party had transformed Haryana into a power-surplus state during its tenure. During the Congress government's rule, four thermal power plants and one nuclear power plant were established in the state. However, throughout its entire tenure, the BJP government has failed to generate even a single unit of electricity,” he said.
He said the generation capacity of the plants established by the Congress government has actually been reduced, while electricity tariffs have also been hiked exorbitantly. Despite these increases, the government is failing to provide electricity to the people when they need it most.
Hooda said the government is busy squandering hundreds of crores of Rupees without even purchasing any electricity even as the entire state is grappling with a severe power crisis.
“The government has made a payment of ₹ 1345 crores without receiving a single unit of electricity in return. This matter pertains to Teesta Urja Limited, a company based in Sikkim. Surprisingly, such a substantial sum was disbursed to Teesta without the approval of the Cabinet, the Chief Minister, or the Power Minister,” he said.
Former CM Hooda stated that the Congress government had entered into an agreement with Teesta Urja to procure 200 megawatts of power in order to meet Haryana's electricity requirements. This agreement was signed in 2010, and the company commenced power generation in 2017. However, under the terms of this agreement, the government went ahead and paid out a sum of ₹ 1345 crores without having actually drawn any electricity.
“Had the government approached the Supreme Court regarding this matter, this money, representing the public's hard-earned money, could have been saved. The government must explain why it did not approach the Supreme Court. Furthermore, why did the Chief Minister, the Cabinet, and the Minister fail to obtain the necessary approval for such a massive payment,” he questioned.
