Ludhiana, September 17, 2025: Architect Sanjay Goel, chief architect of Designex Architects and former director of Ludhiana Smart city Ltd. delivered his presentation in International Symposium on Smart Sustainable Green Cities, enhancing urban resilience and sustainability through India- UK collaboration held at Munjal Birmingham city University Centre of innovation and entrepreneurship Ludhiana.
This symposium is supported by British Council and Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR).
The project team is Dr Vahid from UK, Dr Abdul Hamal from UK, Dr Neeta Raj Sharma, Dr Suruchi Jindal, Pf Cham Atwal, Dr Samta Suresh, Dr Prem Kumar Project expert and Col CM Lakhanpal.
Today’s key note speaker in first session were Dr Neeta Raj Sharma, Karolina Medwecka and Ar Sanjay Goel. It’s a three day symposium and many more leading experts will share their experience on day two and day three.
The theme areas under SSG Bridge are Urban Resilience, Technological Innovation, Environmental Sustainability and Inclusive Governance.
Architect Sanjay Goel in his detailed presentation shared journey of Ludhiana smart city during past years covering every project undertaken along with its photographs and achievements. He highlighted that funding under smart city mission is very less as only hundred crore each every year was being paid by state government and centre government, so two hundred crore per year was a negligible amount to take care of big city like Ludhiana.
Goel highlighted that sustainable city is one that can meet the needs of its present population without compromising ability of future generations to meet their own needs. This concept is built on achieving a delicate balance between three core dimensions, economic vitality, social equity and environmental protection.
A Sustainable city is resilient, inclusive and ensures the long-term well-being of its people and the natural world by retaining its natural resources and reducing environmental risks.
A comparison between two leading cities of two countries was made and discussed for the betterment in future, including Ludhiana from India and Birmingham from United Kingdom.
Goel in his presentation touched upon environmental pressures, infrastructure gaps, and smart city initiatives. The symposium is being attended by many expert stakeholders, not only from India and United Kingdom, but from many more places including academicians from different universities and colleges of Punjab.
Goel also explained that all cities are upcoming smart cities, not just smart cities. He also explained that it is a continuous process at least for one decade till the target of best liability in all upcoming smart cities of India is achieved.
Not only district administration but state government as well as Central government must look into the problems of the cities and sit together with expert town planners and architects to solve chronic problems of the cities so that people can enjoy not only smart education and smart health, but everything else in the cities.
