Khanna, November 28, 2015: “Gall Bladder surgery is one of the commonest surgeries worldwide with gall stone incidence of around 10% in all population having a ratio of 4:1 in women & men respectively. Surgery is the only treatment for this disease. Till recently Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy has been the gold standard surgery for gall stones for the last 25 years. This surgery involves four cuts, made in the abdominal wall and the surgery done through these keyholes. All cuts or keyholes are stitched after completion of the procedure.”
This was stated by Dr. KS Dhillon, Senior Consultant- Advanced Laparoscopic Surgery Specialist at Max Super Specialty Hospital, Mohali. Dr Dhillon has developed a path-breaking technique of Natural Orifice Translumenal Endoscopic Surgery (NOTES), Transvaginal Cholecystectomy for Gall Bladder disease . It speeds up recovery and period of convalescence and also overcomes some of the shortcomings of traditional Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy surgery.
Dr. Dhillon was addressing around 50 doctors from region during a Continuing Medical Education (CME) on ‘Gall Bladder disease’ at Hotel Golden Grain Club , Khanna last night.
Dr Dhillon informed that the common complications after traditional Laparoscopic Gall Bladder surgery include pain , bleeding , hernia ,infection and scar formation . However these complications can be totally avoided in gall bladder removal by the NOTES method.
Dr Dhillon’s technique involves the removal of the Gall Bladder just like delivering a baby through a woman’s natural opening. The gall bladder is visualized through a very small needle puncture in the navel or umbilicus and the surgery is performed through it . The gall bladder along with the stones is taken out through the natural opening of the female patients. The procedure takes about 20-25 minutes and is totally scar-less and no stitching of abdomen or skin is done .It is bloodless surgery as no nerves are cut with  no pain after the surgery. Patients are discharged on the same day 4-5 hours after surgery, he pointed out.
Meanwhile recently Dr Dhillon was invited to the 10th International ‘Natural Orifice Surgery Consortium For Assessment and Research (NOSCAR) Summit – 2015’ in Chicago to present his work . NOSCAR is the premiere International body where leading innovationists from all over the world present their work. Dr Dhillon's sSummit. His technique was referred to as the path breaking headway in NOTES as he has made it simpler and halved the time of surgery to 25-35 minutes with no reported complication.
