From ‘Icchogil’ to ‘Ramgarhia’- The journey of Maharaja Jassa Singh

Ludhiana, May 12, 2023: To remember the fight for freedom, equality and dignity, the Ramgarhia Educational Council held a seminar on the life and times of Maharaja Jassa Singh Ramgarhia, on the occasion of his 300th Birth Anniversary. 
This seminar was held at Baba Gurmukh Singh Hall of Ramgarhia Girls College, where eminent historians Dr. Inderjit Singh Vasu and Dr. Anurag Singh unravelled the history of Punjab in the 18th century and talked of the valour of Maharaja Jassa Singh Ramgarhia who extended his empire from the plains of Punjab to the hill states of Kangra and Chamba where he spread the tenets of the Khalsa as put forward by Guru Gobind Singh. He fought bravely against the atrocities of Ahmad Shah Abdali who attacked the Punjab eight times. 

Sant Giani Amir Singh of Gurudwara Jawaddi Taksal was the Chief Guest on the occasion , and he released the book, ‘ Maharaja Jassa Singh Ramgarhia’ edited by Ranjodh Singh, President , R.E.C. This book is a compilation of scholarly articles on the life of this brave Sikh General who came from the village of Icchogil and made a name for himself as ‘ Ramgarhia ‘ by building the fort of Ram Rauni close to the Golden Temple to protect the city of Amritsar. 

A.A.P. MLA of Ludhiana Central, Ashok Prashar, former Minister of Tourism and Jails, Govt of Punjab , Hira Singh Gabaria, Harcharan Singh Gohalvadia ( Ex Mayor), Inderjit Singh Babbu, Amarjit Singh Tikka, Jasveer Singh Ryait, Gurmeet Singh Kullar, Harcharan Singh Birson (Senior Vice president), Bhupinder Singh Milap(Vice President), Malkit Singh Barnala, Raghbir Singh Sohal, Harwinder Singh Rubi, Parmjeet Singh Sall, Mohan Singh Gogga(Counselor), Harbhajan Singh Birdi, Mohan Singh Lotey, Chamkaur Singh  were among the intellectuals from the city present in the audience. 

Prof. Jaspaul Kaur, Offg. Principal, Ramgarhia Girls College said that institutions run under R.E.C. are inspired by the noble values and discipline of the great warrior. Maharaja Jassa Singh Ramgarhia paved the way for the establishment of the Sikh Empire under the reign of Maharaja Ranjit Singh.
