Ludhiana, August 4, 2026: Taking a swipe at the resignation of two nominated members—sons of two MLAs—from the Municipal Corporation's Finance Committee, senior leader and former councillor Parminder Mehta said that if the Mayor and the Municipal Commissioner had acted in accordance with the rules, the Municipal Corporation would not have been subjected to such embarrassment.
He said that although both members voluntarily resigned and described their decision as an act of sacrifice, the entire episode has, in reality, turned the Municipal Corporation administration into a subject of public ridicule.
Mehta stated that he has repeatedly urged the Mayor to rise above politics and prioritize the balanced development of the city through the Municipal Corporation House. However, he alleged that the Mayor has not only failed to carry the entire House along but has also not been functioning effectively in line with the views of her own Senior Deputy Mayor and Deputy Mayor.
He further said that had the Mayor acted in accordance with the rules and regulations, there were several experienced councillors within her own party who could have made significant contributions to the Finance Committee as well as to the overall development of the city.
Mehta alleged that the Mayor's image is being tarnished because she is working under the influence of MLAs. He said that the Mayor should come out of the role of a "puppet," exercise her independent judgment, and focus on the city's all-round development.
