Farmers Can Increase Income through White Shrimp Farming on Saline Land Under PMMSY: DC Sachin Gupta

Rohtak, January 19, 2026: Deputy Commissioner Sachin Gupta said that the Haryana Government, through the Fisheries Department, has initiated white shrimp farming under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY). The main objective of this initiative is to utilize the state’s unproductive saline land (brackish water areas) and provide unemployed persons and farmers with high-income livelihood opportunities through white shrimp farming.

He informed that shrimp farming is being carried out over 86 hectares in the district. With the efforts of the Fisheries Department, white shrimp farming has been successfully developed on saline land, yielding highly encouraging results. Brackish water–affected land in the state is being effectively used for shrimp culture, creating a sustainable source of good income. White shrimp farming is significant because of its rapid growth rate, as shrimps attain a weight of 25–35 grams within 120–125 days.

The Deputy Commissioner further said that white shrimp can be farmed in salinity levels ranging from 5 PPT to 25 PPT, making it highly suitable for inland aquaculture. The survival rate of its larvae is higher compared to other species, and the stocking density is 30–40 per square meter, which means up to three lakh shrimps per hectare of water area can be stocked. White shrimp contains 35% protein, 16% fat, and 3% carbohydrates, along with essential minerals. Its protein content is rich in all essential amino acids.

DC Sachin Gupta said that fisheries farmers can substantially enhance their income through white shrimp farming in brackish water. The production ranges from 6 to 9 tonnes per hectare per year, and the market price of white shrimp is approximately ₹375 to ₹520 per kilogram. From one crop in one hectare of saline water area, farmers can earn about ₹10–15 lakh. With proper management, two shrimp crops can be harvested in a year from brackish water.
