Experts Raise Alarm Over Rising Respiratory Diseases, Stress Public Awareness

Chandigarh, March 22, 2026: Emphasising the urgent need for public awareness, leading respiratory experts have raised concerns over the alarming rise in respiratory diseases across India, particularly Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). Increasing air pollution, climate-driven changes in allergens and ozone levels, rapid urbanisation, and delayed diagnosis are among the key factors contributing to this growing health burden.
Addressing this challenge, the Respiratory Education Society organised AEROCON, a focused symposium on obstructive airway diseases with special emphasis on COPD. The event brought together more than 70 chest physicians, reflecting the seriousness with which the medical community is approaching this issue. The scientific programme, supported by Aeroforce, a division of Zydus Healthcare, highlighted the importance of continuous medical education, early diagnosis, and improved patient management.
Renowned experts including Dr. S.K. Jindal, Dr. D. Behera, Dr. Deepak Aggarwal, Dr. Vishal Sharma, Dr. Aditya Jindal and Dr. Robin Gupta shared their insights and strongly advocated for greater public awareness.
Dr. S.K. Jindal stated that COPD is often a “silent killer” that gradually damages the lungs. He urged people to avoid smoking, protect themselves from pollution, and not ignore early respiratory symptoms. He emphasised that timely diagnosis and appropriate treatment can significantly help in controlling the disease.  Dr. Robin Gupta highlighted that delayed diagnosis remains one of the biggest challenges in managing respiratory diseases. He advised that early symptoms such as persistent cough, breathlessness, or chest tightness should not be ignored, and timely medical consultation can prevent serious complications. He also stressed the importance of regular health check-ups and lifestyle modifications.
During the symposium, information was also shared about PEPAIR, a respiratory support device used in the management of lung conditions. The device helps loosen and clear mucus from the airways by providing gentle resistance and vibration during exhalation, thereby making breathing easier for patients with conditions like COPD.
Experts unanimously emphasised that public awareness is the most effective tool to combat the rising burden of respiratory diseases. Promoting regular health screenings, anti-smoking initiatives, pollution control measures, and healthier lifestyles at schools, workplaces, and community levels is essential. This initiative marks an important step towards improving respiratory care standards and achieving better health outcomes for patients across India.
