Mumbai (Anil Bedag): A landmark moment is unfolding for the Indian entertainment industry as Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani’s renowned production house, Excel Entertainment, moves towards a historic partnership with global giant Universal Music Group (International). This collaboration is not merely a business transaction—it represents a powerful step toward positioning Indian content on the global stage.
Discussions between the two companies have been underway for several months. Universal Music Group, which has long aimed to strengthen its presence in the Indian film and content market, sees this deal as a major gateway into one of the world’s most dynamic entertainment ecosystems. For Excel Entertainment, the alliance perfectly aligns with its long-term vision of scaling up productions and expanding its global reach, with several ambitious projects already in the pipeline.
The most distinctive aspect of this agreement is that it is based on a minority stake. Universal Music Group will acquire only a limited share in Excel Entertainment, while complete creative control, ownership, and decision-making authority will firmly remain with founders Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani. All key decisions related to films and content will continue to be driven by Excel’s leadership.
The official announcement of this historic collaboration is set to take place at a grand press conference, expected to be graced by the Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Devendra Fadnavis. The partnership also resonates with the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, which emphasizes taking Indian creativity and storytelling to global audiences.
Notably, this announcement comes at a milestone moment as Excel Entertainment celebrates 25 years of its remarkable journey. Founded in 2001 with the cult classic Dil Chahta Hai, Excel has since delivered iconic films such as the Don franchise, Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, Gully Boy, and Fukrey. On the OTT front, the banner has carved a strong identity with hugely popular and critically acclaimed series like Mirzapur, Made in Heaven, and Dahaad.
The Excel Entertainment–Universal Music Group partnership is poised to be a game-changer for the Indian entertainment industry—one that could redefine how homegrown stories resonate across global platforms, louder and stronger than ever before.
