Empowering women entrepreneurs through Jute training in Ludhiana

Ludhiana, June 4, 2025: Tata Steel Foundation, in collaboration with district administration, Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRIs) and the State Livelihood Mission Punjab under the guidance of ADC (rural development ) Amarjit Singh Bains, a training on jute bag products for women from various Self-Help Groups (SHGs) and individuals in village Jeevanpur has been conducted. The intent was to empower rural women and promote environmental sustainability,

The initiative has led to the formation of a new women-led enterprise named ‘Ludhiana Jute Fashion’, comprising members from five different SHGs. The group has completed bank linkages, launched a social media presence, and created their business identity with visiting cards, laying the foundation for their entrepreneurial journey. In just the months of April and May, the group completed orders worth Rs 30,000.

The training helped the women learn to make jute products including lunch bags, bottle covers, carry bags, pouches, and potlis, with and without embroidery. Tata Steel Foundation also provided the group with raw materials and sewing machines.

The State Livelihood Mission Punjab is encouraging government bodies, industries, and individuals to support these women by buying eco-friendly handmade jute products instead of plastic. This initiative is a strong step forward in making rural women financially independent, while also supporting the environment.
