Chandigarh, November 27, 2025: To commemorate the 76th Constitution Day and to pay tribute to Dr. B.R. Ambedkar’s visionary leadership as the chief architect of the Indian Constitution, the Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Centre, Panjab University, in collaboration with the Institute of Educational Technology and Vocational Education (IETVE), organised a special lecture titled “Indian Constitution: Reflections, Reforms and the Road Ahead.”
Prof. Ashutosh Kumar from the Department of Political Science, Panjab University, delivered the keynote address, which was attended by around 200 students.
Prof. Ashutosh began by emphasising- Why do we need a constitution in a democracy like India? Why can we call Indian Constitution a people’s constitution? Is the constitution of India a cosmopolitan constitution? How the constitution has contributed to the wellbeing of Indian democracy? How the constitution is both a regulatory and prescriptive constitution?
Prof. Ashutosh said that the Constitution of India stands out as one of the oldest Constitution in the modern world as many countries degenerated into dictatorship in the inter war period and most of the post war Asian and African countries' democratic record has been patchy. Constitution stands out for not only recognising the differences but also accommodating and giving representation to them be it language or region or religion, majority or minorities. It is not only a normative/ prescriptive living document but also a regulatory document. As a citizen we take oath to abide by the constitution and we own it and it is our constitutional duty to defend it. Constitution provides a roadmap to the nation, provides a vision for the future.
The event highlighted Dr. Ambedkar’s foundational role in shaping a Constitution grounded in justice, equality, liberty and fraternity, and his commitment to building a democratic framework capable of protecting the rights and dignity of every citizen.
The lecture concluded with a vibrant question and answer session, demonstrating how engaging and thought provoking the lecture had been.
