DMC&H Organizes Blood Donation Camp on the Occasion of World Thalassemia Day
On the occasion of World Thalassemia Day, DMC&H organized a Blood Donation Camp in Dumra Auditorium under the joint initiative of the Department of Pediatrics and the Department of Transfusion Medicine, DMC&H.
Ludhiana, May 9, 2026: On the occasion of World Thalassemia Day, DMC&H organized a Blood Donation Camp in Dumra Auditorium under the joint initiative of the Department of Pediatrics and the Department of Transfusion Medicine, DMC&H. The camp was conducted to spread awareness about thalassemia and highlight the vital role of regular voluntary blood donation in the treatment and survival of thalassemia patients who require frequent blood transfusions.
The camp was inaugurated by Mukesh Verma, Treasurer, DMC&H Managing Society. Dr Puneet Pooni (Professor & Head, Dept of Pediatrics) Dr Deepak Bhat (Professor, Dept of Pediatrics), Dr Rajesh Kumar (Professor & Head, Dept of IHBT), Dr Gurpreet Singh (Assistant Professor, Dept of Pediatrics) and Anit Joseph (Deputy Nursing Superintendent) were also present during the inauguration.
The camp witnessed enthusiastic participation from voluntary blood donors, social workers, students and local residents who came forward to support the noble cause of saving lives through blood donation. The initiative aimed to encourage community participation and strengthen awareness regarding the need for safe and adequate blood supply for patients suffering from thalassemia and other critical illnesses.
A total of 200 units of blood were donated during the camp for the treatment and survival of thalassemia patients who are dependent on regular blood transfusions.
Speaking on the occasion, Bipin Gupta, Secretary, DMC&H Managing Society, appreciated the efforts of the organizing teams and the donors for their selfless contribution. He said, “Blood donation is one of the greatest services to humanity. On World Thalassemia Day, such initiatives become even more meaningful as regular blood donation plays a crucial role in saving the lives of children and patients suffering from thalassemia.”
Dr. G. S. Wander, Principal, DMC&H lauded the commitment of the Departments of Pediatrics and Transfusion Medicine for organizing the camp successfully. He stated, “Voluntary blood donation is essential for maintaining an adequate and safe blood supply. Awareness about thalassemia and community participation in blood donation can significantly improve the quality of life of patients dependent on regular transfusions.”
In his message, Dr Rajesh Kumar, Professor & Head, Dept of IHBT, and Dr Gurpreet Singh, Assistant Professor, Dept of Pediatrics said that World Thalassemia Day serves as an important reminder to spread awareness about the disorder and motivate people to come forward for regular voluntary blood donation. They emphasized that timely availability of safe blood can significantly improve and save the lives of thalassemia patients who depend on lifelong transfusion support.
