Divine blessings, snow-capped dhauladhars and cricket fever: Dharamshala ready for India–Afghanistan ODI

Dharamsala, June 12, 2026: Nestled in the lap of the majestic Dhauladhar mountain range, the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association (HPCA) Stadium in Dharamshala is widely regarded as one of the most picturesque cricket venues in the world. Its breathtaking setting, with snow-capped peaks towering above the lush green outfield, has earned it global acclaim and made it a favourite among players and fans alike.
However, Dharamshala is also known for its unpredictable weather and high rainfall, which often casts a shadow over international cricket fixtures. In keeping with a long-standing local tradition, HPCA officials and cricket administrators sought the blessings of revered local deity Lord Indrunag Ji for favourable weather and the successful conduct of the opening One-Day International between India and Afghanistan, scheduled to be played here on June 13.
Former Union Minister and Member of Parliament Anurag Thakur, accompanied by HPCA office-bearers, visited the historic Indrunag Temple and participated in special prayers and rituals. Lord Indrunag is deeply revered across the Kangra region and is traditionally regarded as the guardian deity associated with rain, prosperity and the well-being of the area. Seeking His blessings before major international matches has become an integral part of Dharamshala's unique cricketing culture.
Those present on the occasion included HPCA Vice-President Vijay Bhandari, Secretary Manuj Sharma, Treasurer Vikram Thakur, Joint Secretary Vishal Sharma, former Secretary Avneesh Parmar and other members of the association.
The atmosphere in Dharamshala has become increasingly vibrant as cricket enthusiasts from across the country arrive to witness the much-anticipated clash. Indian captain Rohit Sharma, vice-captain Shubman Gill and several other members of the Indian squad have already reached the hill town, adding to the excitement among local fans.
Adding to the spectacle is nature's own magnificent backdrop. Fresh snowfall on the Dhauladhar ranges over the past few days has transformed the mountains into a stunning panorama, enhancing the beauty of the venue. The snow-clad peaks overlooking the stadium once again underscore why Dharamshala is often described as the most beautiful cricket ground in the world.
With pleasant weather, crisp mountain air and unparalleled Himalayan vistas, the opening ODI promises to be much more than a sporting contest. It is set to become a celebration of cricket, culture, spirituality and nature.
"It is a matter of pride that Dharamshala continues to host some of the most prestigious matches in world cricket. The response from fans has been overwhelming, and we are confident that tomorrow's match will be a memorable experience for players and spectators alike," an HPCA official said.
Speaking on the occasion, Shri Anurag Thakur said that the Dharamshala Cricket Stadium had emerged as one of Himachal Pradesh's strongest ambassadors on the global stage.
"From its humble beginnings to becoming one of the most admired cricket venues in the world, Dharamshala has showcased the beauty, culture and hospitality of Himachal Pradesh to millions across the globe. International matches have generated employment, strengthened tourism and brought immense pride to the people of the state. HPCA has consistently delivered world-class sporting events, and tomorrow's ODI will be another memorable chapter in this remarkable journey," he said.
The match will mark the opening encounter of the three-match ODI series between India and Afghanistan, with thousands of spectators expected to fill the picturesque stadium for what promises to be a memorable day of international cricket.
