Diaspora Punjabi Writer Shivcharan Singh Gill’s Complete Collection of Stories Released by Prof. Gurbhajan Singh Gill and other prominent personalities
A comprehensive volume titled "The Complete Stories of Shivcharan Singh Gill", based on the six short-story collections of eminent Punjabi fiction writer Shivcharan Singh Gill—Rang Da Patta, Khooh Di Mitti ,Mardanvi Aurat, Saahan Da Bhaar, Khra Khot, Gau Hatya along with his mini stories was formally released today by the Punjabi Lok Virasat Academy.
Ludhiana, July 2, 2026: A comprehensive volume titled "The Complete Stories of Shivcharan Singh Gill", based on the six short-story collections of eminent Punjabi fiction writer Shivcharan Singh Gill—Rang Da Patta, Khooh Di Mitti ,Mardanvi Aurat, Saahan Da Bhaar, Khra Khot, Gau Hatya along with his mini stories was formally released today by the Punjabi Lok Virasat Academy.The book was jointly unveiled by Prof. Gurbhajan Singh Gill, Dr. Pali Bhupinder Singh noted playwright, Inderdeep Singh Gill representing the Rumi family of Shivcharan Singh Gill, and Bal Mukand Sharma, Chairman of the Punjab State Food Commission.
Speaking about the monumental 1,090-page volume, Prof. Gurbhajan Singh Gill, said that Shivcharan Singh Gill, a native of Rumi village in Ludhiana district, is one of the foremost voices of the first generation of Punjabi diaspora writers. Having spent a major part of his life teaching in England, he portrayed with remarkable sensitivity the complexities of immigrant life, its hardships, and the struggle against racial discrimination.Prof. Gill observed that the characters in Shivcharan Singh Gill's stories are not imaginary creations but living men and women drawn from the world around him. His stories truthfully reflect the harsh realities of immigrant life, and his portrayal of the diaspora experience is both artistically accomplished and deeply relevant to its times. He further stated that by spending most of his productive years in Britain, Shivcharan Singh Gill significantly broadened the scope of Punjabi diaspora fiction through his creative writing. His story collections have appeared over different periods. This new volume, edited by his daughter Sardarni Shivdeep Kaur Dhesi, is a valuable contribution and a precious gift to Punjabi diaspora literature.
Dr. Pali Bhupinder Singh appreciated the Gill family's initiative in bringing together all of Shivcharan Singh Gill's stories in a single volume. He said that the publication would serve as an important reference work for future researchers and scholars. He also announced that the volume would be placed in the library of Panjab University for academic use.Readers will now be able to access the entire body of Shivcharan Singh Gill's short fiction through this comprehensive edition.
Bal Mukand Sharma, Chairman of the Punjab State Food Commission, remarked that writers who create literature while living abroad serve as unpaid ambassadors of their homeland. He noted that Shivcharan Singh Gill, through his literary work in England, fulfilled this role with distinction. He also congratulated Sukhwinder 'Sukhi', proprietor of Caliber Publications, Patiala, for the painstaking effort invested in editing, designing, and publishing this impressive volume.
On behalf of the Shivcharan Singh Gill family, Inderdeep Singh Gill of Rumi expressed gratitude to the distinguished guests for participating in the book release ceremony.
On the occasion, copies of "Lekhak Vela"—a book based on interviews by Dr. Naresh Kumar, Professor and Head of the Punjabi and Dogri Department at the Central University of Himachal Pradesh, Dharamshala—and a special Surjit Rampuri issue of the literary magazine Kaav Lok, edited by Dr. Lakhwinder Singh Johal, were also presented to the guests.
