Desecration of Babasaheb Ambedkar’s Statue and Gulzar Singh’s Death Raise Serious Questions on Dalit Security and Constitutional Protection in Punjab: Tarun Chugh

Chandigarh, September 10, 2026: BJP National Headquarters In-Charge and Rajya Sabha MP Tarun Chugh today launched a sharp attack on the Aam Aadmi Party government over the desecration of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar’s statue in Ludhiana and the death of Gulzar Singh in Sangrur. He said that under the AAP government, neither the Constitution is safe, nor is the dignity of its architect being protected, nor is the voice of ordinary citizens secure in Punjab.

Chugh said that it was a matter of grave concern that the Punjab Government was unable to ensure even the security and dignity of statues of Dr. Ambedkar. “When the Punjab Government cannot protect the dignity of the architect of the Constitution, how can it claim to protect constitutional values and the rights of ordinary citizens?” he asked.

Chugh said that, on the other hand, Gulzar Singh in Sangrur had raised his voice against the drug menace, following which his death has raised serious questions. His family has levelled serious allegations of harassment and caste-based abuse, and action has been taken against accused persons in the case. He said the incident raises serious questions about the dignity, security and access to justice of Punjab’s Dalit community. The government must answer why an ordinary citizen had to pay with his life after raising his voice against the drug menace in his own village.

He said that under the Bhagwant Mann Government, Punjab is facing a serious drug menace on one hand, while incidents involving the desecration of statues of Babasaheb Ambedkar, the architect of the Constitution, are taking place on the other. This is not merely a failure of law and order, but also raises serious questions about the sensitivity and governance of the AAP Government.

Chugh said that before coming to power, the Aam Aadmi Party made tall claims about the Constitution, social justice and the rights of ordinary citizens, but its real face has been exposed after assuming power. He said Punjab’s Dalit community does not need speeches; it needs dignity and security. “Babasaheb’s statues do not need politics; they need protection. And the people of Punjab do not need fear; they need justice,” he said.

Chugh demanded that those responsible for the desecration of Dr. Ambedkar’s statue be identified and arrested immediately and strict action be taken against them. He also demanded a security review of all major Ambedkar statues and other sensitive locations across Punjab and a fair, impartial and time-bound investigation into Gulzar Singh’s death.

He said, “The AAP Government must answer the people of Punjab. It claims to protect the Constitution, but can it protect the dignity of the Constitution-maker? Punjab is asking: when the Government cannot protect the dignity of Babasaheb Ambedkar’s statue, how will it protect the dignity of the Constitution?”
