Rohtak, August 22, 2025: Deputy Commissioner Sachin Gupta directed officials to complete the drainage of water from agricultural land at the earliest so that crops are not damaged. The Irrigation Department is continuously carrying out drainage work in the identified villages of the district round the clock. Currently, 165 pumps are operational at 48 permanent pump houses for water drainage, and every day about 2370 cusecs of water is being discharged through the drains.
DC Sachin Gupta was reviewing the implementation of various government schemes and the water drainage work after the recent rains, in a meeting with officials of the Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare Department and the Irrigation Department at the Mini Secretariat. He said that the Irrigation Department should complete the drainage work with full capacity at the earliest. Concerned officials should also make regular visits to waterlogged villages along with officers of other related departments and review the situation. He also gathered information about crop damage caused due to waterlogging.
The Deputy Commissioner instructed the Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare Department to encourage farmers to adopt crop diversification and grow alternative crops besides paddy, while also exploring marketing opportunities for such crops. He gave directions for promoting crop diversification, implementing the PM-Kisan Samman Nidhi scheme, ensuring the availability of chemical fertilizers like urea, and taking strict action to prevent misuse of urea for non-agricultural purposes. Adequate stock of urea is available in the district, and two FIRs have already been registered against those misusing it.
The Deputy Commissioner informed that under the 20th installment of PM-Kisan Samman Nidhi, an amount of ₹14.98 crore has been transferred to 74,891 farmers in the district. During the Kharif 2024-25 season, 3,25,659 soil samples were collected, and 2,79,867 soil health cards have been distributed. He also instructed that arrangements should be made for adequate availability of fertilizers for the upcoming Rabi season, and farmers should be encouraged to form Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs).
He further stated that work must be carried out to achieve the target set by the department for the improvement of waterlogged and saline lands in the district. For this, the Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare Department has introduced solar-based vertical drainage systems. In such lands, the groundwater level rises above 10 feet, and the high salt content in water damages the crops. To improve such lands, a tube well is installed for every 50 acres to lower the groundwater level so that the salts seep down and crops are not harmed. The department conducts surveys and collects soil and water samples for testing. After the harvesting of wheat, solar-based vertical drainage systems are installed at identified sites.
On this occasion, Deputy Director of Agriculture Dr. Surender Singh, Regional Groundwater Conservation Officer Neena Sehrawat, Executive Engineer of Irrigation Department Arun Munjal, Rajesh Bhardwaj, and other concerned officials were present.
