Nawanshahr, May 20, 2022: Deputy Commissioner Navjot Pal Singh Randhawa on Friday issued advisory and Do’s and Dont’s during thunderstorm and lightening.

Deputy Commissioner asked the people to stay indoors, during thunderstorm or lightning, close doors and windows. He said that if anyone gets caught in the storm outside, whether on foot or in a vehicle, he must seek safe shelter until the storm passes. He said that people must avoid metal structures and construction with metal sheets. He said that people must check the weather forecast before planning any outdoor activities. DC told the people to unplug all electric appliances or anything connected to electricity. Further, keep away from all utility lines and objects that conduct electricity including power, telephone, overhead wire, rail-road tracks, wind mills etc.

In the advisory, he said that during the storm, if someone is on a two-wheeler, he must seek safe shelter immediately. However, those inside a car or bus must remain in the vehicle until the storm passes or help arrives.  

DC said that first aid can save life of the person hit by lightning. He said that it is safe to touch a lightning strike victim and rescuer must check if the victim is breathing and has a heartbeat. The best place to check for a pulse is the carotid artery which is found on your neck directly below your jaw.

He said that if the victim is not breathing, immediately begin mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. If the victim does not have a pulse, start cardiac compressions as well (CPR), check for broken bones, loss of hearing and eyesight, any burns, trauma. He said that victim must be taken to nearby hospital and one must call helpline number 1078 to inform about incident.
