CU Punjab Organizes National Technology Day Workshop on Patent Searching, Drafting and Technology Transfer
Central University of Punjab through its Intellectual Property Management and Commercialization Cell (IPMCC) and Institution’s Innovation Council (IIC) organized a one-day hands-on workshop on “Patent Searching, Drafting and Technology Transfer” on the occasion of National Technology Day.
Bathinda, May 15, 2026: Central University of Punjab through its Intellectual Property Management and Commercialization Cell (IPMCC) and Institution’s Innovation Council (IIC) organized a one-day hands-on workshop on “Patent Searching, Drafting and Technology Transfer” on the occasion of National Technology Day. The workshop, organized under the patronage of Vice-Chancellor Prof. Raghavendra Prasad Tiwari, was conducted with the support of the Punjab State Council for Science and Technology (PSCST), Chandigarh.
The workshop witnessed enthusiastic participation from 102 participants, including faculty members, research scholars, non-teaching staff, and undergraduate and postgraduate students from diverse disciplines such as Pharmaceutical Sciences, Physics, Human Genetics and Molecular Medicine, Geology, Microbiology, Law, Education, and Financial Administration.
The programme commenced with a welcome address by Prof. Raj Kumar, Incharge CIL, followed by an introduction to the workshop theme by Dr. Preeti Khetarpal, Organizing Secretary.
Dr. Dapinder Kaur Bakshi, Joint Director, PSCST Chandigarh, delivered the keynote address in online mode and emphasized the importance of intellectual property awareness, innovation, and technology-driven entrepreneurship in higher educational institutions. She encouraged participants to actively engage in patent creation and technology transfer for transforming research into socially relevant innovations.
During the technical sessions, Dr. Chitra Arvind, Founding Partner, Accures IP Care, explained the Patent System of India and various forms of Intellectual Property Rights, including patents, trademarks, copyrights, and designs. She highlighted key patentability criteria such as novelty, inventive step, and industrial applicability, and conducted a hands-on patent drafting exercise for participants. She also emphasized that patenting is only the first step and discussed the importance of technology transfer and commercialization for transforming research into socially beneficial innovations. Dr. Arvind shared insights on commercialization pathways, patent protection strategies, and translating research “from bench to market.”
Rashi Prakash, Assistant Manager, Foundation for Innovation and Technology Transfer (FITT), IIT Delhi, during her virtual address, trained participants on prior art search strategies and patent literature searches, enabling them to understand methods for identifying existing innovations and strengthening patent applications.
Dr. Akshay Nag, CEO, DST-NIDHI iTBI - CUPRDF, highlighted the importance of intellectual property valuation and shared practical insights on commercialization pathways, startup incubation, and innovation-driven entrepreneurship.
A panel discussion on “Insights in IP Creation and Commercialization Activities by Higher Educational Institutions” was also organized featuring Dr. Chitra Arvind, Dr. Akshay Nag, Prof. Raj Kumar, and Prof. Monisha Dhiman, moderated by Dr. Preeti Khetarpal. The discussion focused on strengthening innovation ecosystems, promoting patent culture, and enhancing industry-academia collaboration in higher educational institutions.
The workshop concluded with addresses by Prof. Anjana Munshi, Director Research and Development, and Prof. Ramakrishna Wusurika, Dean In-charge Academics, who appreciated the efforts of IPMCC and IIC in promoting innovation, intellectual property awareness, and entrepreneurship among students and researchers. Prof. Monisha Dhiman, President IIC, delivered the vote of thanks.
