Central University of Punjab’s faculty Prof. Felix Bast elected into International Science Council Advisory Council

Professor Felix Bast, Head of the Department of Botany at the Central University of Punjab in Bathinda (CUPB), was recently selected into the Asia-Pacific Advisory Council of the International Science Council (ISC), a major UN affiliated think-tank, during a meeting held at Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on 6th October 2023.

Bathinda, October 17, 2023: Professor Felix Bast, Head of the Department of Botany at the Central University of Punjab in Bathinda (CUPB), was recently selected into the Asia-Pacific Advisory Council of the International Science Council (ISC), a major UN affiliated think-tank, during a meeting held at Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on 6th October 2023.

International Science Council (ISC), based in Paris, France, is an international NGO created in 2018, that brings together scientific bodies from various domains, including international scientific unions and associations from natural and social sciences, and the humanities. ISC’s vision is to advance Science as a global public good.

Professor Felix Bast is the only Indian in the newly elected six-member high profile advisory council appointed by ISC, which will provide guidance and advice on priority programmes for the newly established International Science Council Regional Focal Point for Asia and the Pacific (ISC RPF-AP). Other five newly elected members of advisory council of ISC RPF-AP are Prof. Pal Ahluwalia, Vice Chancellor of University of South Pacific, Fiji; Prof. Gisela Concepcion from Nationals Research Council of the Philippines; Prof. Jia Gensuo from Chinese Academy of Sciences; Prof. Yukio Himiyama from Japan who was the past president of International Geographical Union; and Prof. Kathryn Robinson from Australian National University. The newly elected advisory council, which will serve a term of five years, will hold regular meetings under the aegis of Australian Academy of Sciences, Canberra, Australia.

Prof. Raghavendra P. Tiwari, Vice-Chancellor of the Central University of Punjab, congratulated Professor Felix Bast on this remarkable international achievement. He stated that this is an honour for the Central University of Punjab to be part of such a prestigious International scientific think-tank. He added that this opportunity would allow Prof. Bast to showcase Indian Science to an international arena and promote science-informed good governance model of Hon’ble Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji.
Prof. Felix Bast expressed his gratitude towards Prof. Tiwari for motivation and all other members of ISC from India including Indian Council for Social Science Research (ICSSR), Indian National Science Academy (INSA) and its Young Academy, INYAS, all of which supported his election. He emphasized that his election underscores the increasing regional and global significance of India, particularly in the wake of India's G20 presidency.

Originally hails from Keralam, Professor Felix Bast holds PhD in Marine Biology from MEXT, Tokyo, Japan and has been working at the Central University of Punjab for the last 13 years. He is an alumnus of Department of Chemical Engineering, IIT Bombay and Friday Harbor Laboratories, University of Washington, USA. Prof. Bast has visited 27 countries for research training and dissemination. He has published 129 research articles and 7 books, including national best sellers Voyage to Antarctica and Trees of Ramayana. He had been Principal Investigator for 15 projects with total sanctioned grant of 2.13 Crore rupees. Nine students have been awarded PhD degrees under his guidance.
