Central University of Punjab to Implement Innovative Pedagogy based on ‘Student Co-Instructor’ Model to Foster Learner-Centric Education

Bathinda, July 18, 2025: In a pioneering step towards transforming traditional classroom dynamics and promoting active student engagement in teaching-learning process, the Central University of Punjab, Bathinda (CU Punjab) under the transformative mentorship of Dharmendra Pradhan, Union Education Minister and the visionary leadership of Prof. Raghavendra P. Tiwari, Vice-Chancellor, is set to implement an innovative teaching-learning practice titled the Student Co-Instructor Model from the current academic session. This initiative aims to cultivate a learner-centric educational environment by actively involving students as co-partners in the instructional process.
Traditionally, Indian classrooms have relied heavily on lecture-based “chalk and talk” pedagogy, which often limits opportunities for critical thinking, creativity, and collaboration. Recognizing the need for an interactive and inclusive pedagogical shift, CU Punjab’s innovative pedagogy i.e. Student Co-Instructor Model places students at the heart of the teaching-learning experience.
Under the Student Co-Instructor Model, one student will be assigned the role of co-instructor in each class on a rotational basis. The course teacher will allocate a topic in advance, allowing the designated student to prepare thoroughly. Each class will begin with a 20-minute presentation by the student co-instructor, who will share his/her insights and understanding of the topic. The teacher will then build upon this foundation, elaborating on additional concepts and clarifying complex aspects. The final 20 minutes of the session will be devoted to a class-wide discussion, led by the student co-instructor, and concluded with expert observations by the faculty member.
Speaking about this novel initiative, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Raghavendra P. Tiwari remarked, “The Student Co-Instructor Model is a step towards nurturing inquisitiveness, creativity, and team spirit among students. It will help us build a learner-centric ecosystem aligned with the vision of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.” He further emphasized that this approach not only deepens student engagement with the curriculum but also fosters essential life skills such as public speaking, critical thinking, and collaboration. “This model redefines the role of the teacher—from being the sole disseminator of knowledge to a facilitator and mentor—thereby democratizing the classroom and encouraging peer-led learning,” Prof. Tiwari added. Rooted in contemporary pedagogical practices while echoing ancient Indian educational values of peer learning and mentorship, the Student Co-Instructor Model integrates the best of both the worlds.
To ensure smooth implementation, the university has instructed all schools and departments to adopt this model in a phased manner across academic programmes. Training and orientation sessions will be organized for faculty and students to facilitate the transition.
With this initiative, CU Punjab once again reinforces its commitment to academic innovation, outcome-based education, and the holistic development of its student community.
