Central University of Punjab Celebrates National Librarian’s Day in Honour of Dr. S.R. Ranganathan’s 133rd Birth Anniversary
The Department of Library and Information Sciences, Central University of Punjab, Bathinda, celebrated National Librarian’s Day to commemorate the 133rd birth anniversary of Padma Shri Dr. S.R. Ranganathan, the Father of Library Science in India. The programme was organised under the patronage of Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor Prof. Raghavendra P. Tiwari.

Bathinda, August 13, 2025: The Department of Library and Information Sciences, Central University of Punjab, Bathinda, celebrated National Librarian’s Day to commemorate the 133rd birth anniversary of Padma Shri Dr. S.R. Ranganathan, the Father of Library Science in India. The programme was organised under the patronage of Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor Prof. Raghavendra P. Tiwari.
The event commenced with paying floral tribute to the portrait of Dr. S.R. Ranganathan, followed by a welcome address from Dr. Bhaw Nath Pandey, Dean, School of Information and Communication Studies, and Head, Department of Library and Information Sciences. Dr. Pandey shared his views and emphasizes on the philosophy, contributions and enduring legacy of Dr. Ranganathan in shaping modern librarianship.
Faculty members, including Dr. Sukhdev Singh, Somesh Rai, Dr. Florence Guite and Dr. Rishabh Srivastava were also present and addressed the august gathering, reflecting Dr. Ranganathan’s pioneering role in advancing library services and master piece book written by him “Five Laws of Library Science” and his vision for equitable access to knowledge, along with his other contributions in the domain of Library and Information Science.
The event witnessed active participation from research scholars, students and library professionals. The discussions centred on Dr. Ranganathan’s principles, Five Laws of Library Science highlighting their enduring significance in today’s rapidly evolving information environment.
