CCATAX Urges CBDT to Extend Tax Deadlines

ITR Filing Lags; Accountants Push for Extension
Chandigarh, August 27, 2025: The Chandigarh Chartered Accountants Taxation Association (CCATAX) has urged the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) to extend the deadlines for filing Income Tax Returns and Audit Reports for Assessment Year 2025–26, citing widespread compliance hurdles.

In a representation, the association noted that only 3.35 crore returns had been filed by August 20, compared with 7.41 crore by July 31 last year, reflecting a shortfall of nearly 55 per cent with just weeks left for the September 15 deadline. The delay, it said, stemmed from the late release of ITR and audit utilities, persistent glitches on the tax portal, new reporting formats mandated by ICAI, and severe monsoon disruptions across several states.

CCATAX sought extensions up to October 31 for non-audit cases, November 30 for audit reports, December 31 for audit cases, and March 31 for revised and belated returns. President Dr Balwinder Singh and secretary Manoj Kohli said timely relief would ease taxpayer hardship and improve filing accuracy.
