Carlos Pena: We created chances but couldn’t convert them

Mumbai, January 16, 2023: FC Goa head coach Carlos Pena rued missed chances after his team dropped points from a winning position to eventually draw 2-2 against NorthEast United on Sunday.

Edu Bedia’s and Iker Guarrotxena’s goals put the Gaurs in the lead twice, but Wilmar Jordan Gil’s brace helped the Highlanders bounce back and secure a point from the clash.

Speaking after the match, Pena said that not converting their chances cost them the three points.

“It was disappointing because today was a day to get three points, if we had dominated both the boxes then it was a day to get all three points. We created chances and we couldn’t convert, we gave them too many chances to score a goal and I think they (NorthEast United) were better in the boxes,” he said.

The Men in Orange also conceded a penalty each in both halves, both of which paved the way for the Highlanders’ goals.

“I’m not sure if both are penalties but now is not the time to complain and give excuses. When you score you have to defend with whatever you have, so yes I am upset as we were looking forward to three points tonight,” the 38-year-old commented.
‘We need to work harder’
Carlos Pena called for his team to put in more effort in the upcoming matches, to stay within contention of the playoff spots.

“I was not surprised today, they (NorthEast United) changed their way of playing and I have watched their games and I knew they would improve and put more presence into the boxes. They created more problems for us with two strikers, I am sure that NorthEast United FC will get more points.

“Apart from that, I am not happy with the performance of my team. I think we need to give more, put in more effort and work harder in the remaining games,” he signed off.

Up next for FC Goa in the ISL is a clash against Kerala Blasters on January 22. The match will be held at the Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Fatorda, Goa with the kick-off slated for 7:30 pm.
