BJP Takes Control of Dharamshala Panchayat Samiti; Alok Kumar Elected Chairperson, Saroj Vice-Chairperson

Dharamshala, July 2, 2026: After securing the posts of Mayor and Deputy Mayor in the Dharamshala Municipal Corporation, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday further consolidated its position by winning the elections for the Chairperson and Vice-Chairperson of the Dharamshala Panchayat Samiti.
Alok Kumar was elected Chairperson, while Saroj was chosen as the Vice-Chairperson, giving the BJP control of the Panchayat Samiti.
Welcoming the outcome, Dharamshala MLA Sudhir Sharma congratulated the newly elected Chairperson, Vice-Chairperson and all members of the Panchayat Samiti. He said the victory reflected the unity, discipline and collective efforts of the BJP's elected Block Development Committee (BDC) members.
Sharma stated that although the state government took considerable time to announce the election schedule for the Panchayat Samiti, the polls were eventually conducted peacefully and democratically. He said the BJP remained united throughout the process, enabling the party to secure a clear mandate and form the Panchayat Samiti.
Expressing confidence in the newly elected leadership, the MLA said Chairperson Alok Kumar, Vice-Chairperson Saroj and all elected members would work in close coordination to accelerate development across the Dharamshala development block and fulfil the aspirations of the people.
Referring to the pending elections for the posts of Chairperson and Vice-Chairperson of the Zila Parishad, Sharma said the BJP would challenge the delay before the court. Alleging that the Panchayati Raj system was being weakened by the continued postponement of these elections, he urged the state government to announce the election schedule for the remaining Zila Parishads without further delay. He also demanded that accountability be fixed on officials responsible for the failure to conduct the elections in several districts.
