Ludhiana, May 6, 2026: As the wheat harvesting season in Ludhiana approaches its final stages, Additional Deputy Commissioner (G) Poonam Singh on Wednesday stressed the urgent need to ensure zero incidents of stubble burning during these crucial last days.
Singh, while chairing a meeting with officials from various departments including Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare, PPCB, Revenue, Police, Panchayats, Mandi Board, Co-operative, and other stakeholders, highlighted that with around 2.38 lakh hectares under wheat cultivation this year, the final phase of harvesting is a critical period for strict monitoring.
Singh directed Sub-Divisional Magistrates (SDMs) and nodal officers to continue to maintain close surveillance across their respective areas and act promptly against any cases of straw burning. Stressing a zero-tolerance approach, she called for intensified and coordinated efforts among all departments. She also urged officials to further accelerate awareness campaigns among farmers through camps, mobile vans, and informational materials, explaining the harmful impacts of stubble burning—such as air pollution, soil degradation, nutrient loss, and health risks caused by smoke and particulate matter.
Reaffirming the administration’s commitment, she noted that farmers will be supported with guidance on scientific crop residue management techniques. All departments, including agriculture, pollution control, revenue, cooperatives, and panchayats, have been asked to work together to ensure that the end of the harvesting season does not lead to environmental damage.
