Chandigarh, May 23, 2026: Senior Congress leader and MLA Pargat Singh launched a sharp attack on the state government over the worsening power crisis in Punjab, saying that the entire electricity system has collapsed amid the intense summer heat and the government has completely failed. Expressing concern, he said that if the situation continues like this, conditions could become even worse in the coming days.
Pargat Singh said it is unfortunate that around 1.5 lakh complaints related to the power department are still pending, while the control room staff has gone on strike. In such circumstances, the difficulties faced by the common people are continuously increasing. From cities to villages, people are being forced to endure hours-long power cuts.
He questioned the government, asking when the people of Punjab will finally get relief. He demanded that all pending complaints be resolved immediately, talks be held with the striking employees without delay to end the crisis, and emergency measures be taken to improve the power infrastructure.
He alleged that the government made no preparations to strengthen the electricity system before the summer season. Neither was the capacity of transformers increased, nor was the shortage of technical staff addressed, and the grievance redressal mechanism was not strengthened. Now, as temperatures continue to rise, the entire system appears to be failing. He said the government must move beyond advertisements and publicity and work on the ground to provide basic facilities to the people.
Pargat Singh said that farmers, small traders, students, and ordinary families are facing the worst difficulties. In villages, crops and household work are being affected, while in cities, businesses and daily life have been disrupted. He added that all government claims of Punjab being power-surplus have proven hollow.
