A one-day seminar was organized by the PG Biotechnology Department of Lyallpur Khalsa College

Jalandhar: A National Seminar was organized by the PG Biotechnology Department of Lyallpur Khalsa College in collaboration with MBSI (Microbiologist Society of India). Keeping in mind the need of the hour, the theme of this seminar was “Stem Cell Technology and its Role in Society”. 

The seminar was inaugurated by the College Principal Prof. Jasreen Kaur, Dean Research and Head Biotechnology Dr. Arun Dev Sharma and MBSI Coordinator Dr. Inderjeet Kaur. 

The main speakers of this seminar were Simmi Singh, Chairperson, Arjan Veer Foundation, New Delhi and Jasleen Garcha. The first lecture of the seminar was given by Mrs. Simmi Singh, she gave information about stem cell and explained its importance. In her speech, she made the students aware about the prevention of many diseases like blood cancer, thalassemia, chronic kidney disease etc. with stem cell technology. Along with this, she also highlighted that despite India's population being very high, the number of stem cell donors in India is 0.02%. The main reason for this is lack of awareness among people. Due to the scarcity of these cell donors, people have to get stem cells from abroad, which costs 25-30 lakh rupees. Which is beyond the reach of every human being. In her speech, she told people to be aware about stem cell technology.

The second speaker of the seminar, Jasleen Garcha, told the audience how to become a stem cell donor and what technical methods are required for that. She conducted a workshop on this at the end of the lecture, in which 35 students of the department and two teachers, Dr. Arun Dev Sharma and Dr. Inderjeet Kaur, registered themselves as stem cell donors and gave their buccal swab samples.
