Ludhiana, July 30, 2026: A few hours of heavy rainfall created flood-like conditions across the city, with dirty rainwater entering homes and commercial establishments, causing extensive damage to property.
Sharing this information, senior leader and former councillor Parminder Mehta alleged that the concerned authorities, is directly responsible for the situation. He said that on May 8, he had submitted a memorandum to the Municipal Commissioner, Ludhiana (MCL) urging the authorities to ensure timely cleaning of sewerage chambers, road-side drain grates, stormwater drains and the Budha Nullah before the onset of the monsoon. He added that MLA Madan Lal Bagga was also present at the time.
Mehta claimed that the authorities concerned failed to take the warning seriously and neglected his duties. As a result, rainwater flooded several major areas of the city, including Talab Bazaar, Gur Mandi, Saban Bazaar, Kesar Ganj Mandi Road, Chaura Bazaar, Maleri Gali, Roopa Mistry Gali, Sagla Wala Shivala Road, Chaudi Sadak, Partap Bazaar, Town Hall Road, and areas around the Municipal Corporation headquarters. He said that water entered homes and shops, causing financial losses worth lakhs of rupees.
He further stated that in localities surrounding Budha Nullah, dirty sewer water mixed with rainwater overflowed and entered people's homes, creating miserable and unhygienic conditions.
Mehta appealed to the Punjab Government and the Municipal Commissioner to compensate residents for the financial losses caused by the flooding. He demanded that the compensation be recovered from the salaries and other benefits of the officials responsible for the alleged negligence.
