Chandigarh, August 22, 2023: Panjab University Colloquium Committee celebrated NAAC A++ Grade by holding a distinguished talk that delved into the transformative journey of prolific Playwright Dr.Atamjit and his plays that have left an indelible mark on the world of theatre.

Presided over by Prof. RenuVig, Vice Chancellor of Panjab University, the colloquium witnessed an engaging exploration of Dr.Atamjit's remarkable journey as a playwright and the impactful messages woven into his creations. Prof.Vig in her address stated that Dr.Atamjit’s narrative prowess extends beyond nationalities and religions, highlighting the universal message of humanity's intrinsic connection.

The Panjab University Colloquium marked another milestone in celebrating the remarkable contributions of Dr.Atamjit, whose plays continue to inspire and ignite conversations that resonate deeply with audiences worldwide.

Dr.Atamjit’s talk majorly focused on the playwright about two unsung Indian heroes. One was about the life and struggles of Makhan Singh, who played an important part for the freedom of East African country, Kenya. He emphasized that Makhan Singh (27 December 1913 – 18 May 1973) emerged as a prominent labour union leader, originally from India, and is acclaimed for laying the groundwork for trade unionism in Kenya. Beyond just orchestrating the labour movement within Kenya, he championed the call for complete independence of the nation. His commitment led to his imprisonment for a span of 16 years. However, the remarkable contributions of this courageous individual from Punjab have remained obscure, both in Kenya and India.

The second eminent personality was Dr. Diwan Singh Kalepani, who selflessly served the people of Andaman and worked for their upliftment. Dr. Atamjit shed light on the life journey of Dr. Kalepani during the event. Dr. Kalepani, born in 1897 in the village of Ghalotian Khurd near Sialkot (which is now located in Pakistan), served as a doctor in the military. A distinguished philanthropist, Dr. Diwan Singh Kalepani, faced significant hardships due to his beliefs. He endured brutal torture and ultimately sacrificed his life for his principles while imprisoned by the Japanese at Cellular Jail in Andaman (then known as Kalepani). In 1938, he authored the poetic masterpiece "VagdePani," and his other poetic works, "Antim Lehran" and "Malhian De Ber," were published after his passing. Dr. Diwan Singh Kalepani's poetry stands out due to his scientific approach, profound understanding of human psychology, aspiration to contribute to humanity, passion for freedom, and unwavering dedication to his ideals. Dr. Atamjit shared excerpts from Dr. Diwan's poetic creations during his presentation.

The presence of Prof. Paru Bal Sidhu, granddaughter of Dr. Diwan Singh Kalepani was a focal point of today’s event.

Prof. Rumina Sethi, Dean of University Instruction in her concluding remarks stated that the commitment to portraying the essence of equality, unity and service in Dr. Atamjit’s plays is highly commendable. “The event stands as a testament to the power of theatre to shape perspectives, foster dialogue and evoke lasting change”, averred Prof Sethi.

Prof.Monica Munjial Singh, Co-ordinator of the colloquium series said that the talk highlighted Dr. Atamjit's profound connection to his works, particularly his plays "Mungu Comrade" and "Kishtiaan VichJahaaz". These two plays have touched the hearts of audiences worldwide, prompting them to reflect on themes of freedom, sacrifice and human values.

Prof. Arun Kumar Grover, former VC of Panjab University, a pertinent pillar in initiating the colloquiumseries in this university graced the event with his presence and addressed the audience. Prof. Grover wasa germane channel for making this interaction with Dr. Atamjit possible.

The event drew a diverse audience of more than 200 participants, including Vice Chancellors of eminent Universities, faculty of PU and other institutes, research scholars, students, theatre enthusiasts and media persons, conveyed Prof.Seema Kapoor, member of colloquium committee.
