52nd Annual Athletic Meet kicks at PAU

Ludhiana, February 13, 2018: The 52nd Annual Athletic Meet, organized by the Directorate of Students’ Welfare, kicked off at Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) today. The Chief Guest, Lata Mahajan Chinnan, former International Hockey Player and PAU alumna, unfurled the flag and released the colourful balloons to mark the inauguration of the meet. She was accompanied by her husband, Dr Manjeet Chinnan, Professor Emeritus, University of Georgia, USA and PAU alumnus; and her family members. Dr A.S. Nanda, Vice-Chancellor, Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU), Ludhiana, and Dr Ramesh Kanwar, Vice-Chancellor, Lovely Professional University, Phagwara, also graced the occasion. Fast-paced bhangra by the students of the College of Agriculture, PAU, enthralled the spectators during the inauguration.

In her remarks, Mrs Lata Mahajan Chinnan, who was the member of the National Hockey Team of India thatrepresented the country during the First Women World Cup in France in 1974, said sports provide additional opportunities. Stating that winning and losing are a part of life, she urged the youth to acquire good education, learn life skills, work hard, and never give-up. Sharing her reminiscences, the PAU alumna remarked, “Knowledge and discipline, I learnt at PAU.” On the occasion, she inaugurated Lata Mahajan Chinnan Pavilion in the University. It may be mentioned that Chinnan Foundation of USA has contributed immensely for the promotion of academics and sports at PAU.

In her welcome address, Dr R.K. Dhaliwal, Director Students’ Welfare, PAU, said, “Sports and games play an integral part in developing the all-round personality of the students by inculcating in them the spirit of sportsmanship, self-confidence and buoyant energies.” It is a matter of pride for PAU that its alumni are making substantial contribution for the upliftment of their alma-mater, she added.

Four constituent colleges of PAU, namely College of Agriculture (COA), College of Agricultural Engineering and Technology (COAE&T), College of Basic Sciences and Humanities (COBS&H), and College of Home Science (COHS), participated in the march past. In addition, students of Institutes of Agriculture (IOA), Gurdaspur and Bathinda, are competing in various events. The deans, directors, heads of the departments, faculty, staff and students, attended the inaugural session.
