World Standards Day and Annual General Meeting Held
The Ludhiana Local Centre of The Institution of Engineers(India) celebrated the World Standards Day and its Annual General Meeting.
Ludhiana, October 30, 2025: The Ludhiana Local Centre of The Institution of Engineers(India) celebrated the World Standards Day and its Annual General Meeting.
The function was graced by Bhushan Kumar, Marketing Manager, Verka Milk Plant, Ludhiana as Chief Guest. Welcoming the guests, Dr. Arvind Dhingra, Chairman, IEI, Ludhiana explained about the various activities the institution performs.
The event started with traditional lamp lighting. Brig.(Retd.) Mastinder Singh, Ex-chairman, IEI, Ludhiana explained the genesis of the Institution of Engineers(India) and its legacy.
Er. Surinder Singh, Secretary, IEI, Ludhiana presented the Annual report of the Ludhiana Local centre highlighting the various technical events conducted by the centre. To celebrate the World Standards Day an expert session was delivered by Kushgra Mittal, Dy. Manager, BIS, Chandigarh. The World Standards Day is celebrated every year in month of October. This year the theme was “Shared vision for a better world: Spotlight on SDG 17 - Partnerships for the Goals”.
Giving a brief about the theme, Dr. Arvind Dhingra explained how standards provide a shared framework that enables meaningful collaboration across industries, governments, and organizations to achieve common objectives. The campaign is aimed at highlighting concrete examples that demonstrate the power of partnership and the impact of working together through standards.
In his address, Mittal started with introduction and genesis of BIS. He then explained that there were regional standards for crops. He also explained various stages as to how a standard formed. He explained that as on now there were 1117 mandatory standards which mainly affect the consumers. Overall there are around 23000 standards. He explained in detail the process of hall mark on jewelry and how one could read and find out about purity of jewelry. He informed that there were 8 BIS laboratories across the country for sample testing. He explained about BIS care app and how it could be used.
Student volunteers from students Chapter at Guru Nanak Dev Engineering College, Ludhiana and Gulzar Group of Institutions, Khanna attended the event.
The new team for 2025-27 was introduced to the house.
Er. Balwinder Singh would be the chairman and Dr. Sudeep Banerjee would be the secretary for the Ludhiana centre for 2025-27. New executive members Dr. Harwinder Singh,Dr. Parminder Singh, Dr. Rajwinder Singh Bansal, Er.Surjit Singh and Dr. Rucha Joshi who were elected to the executive committee for 2025-27 were also introduced to the house.
The meeting ended with a formal vote of thanks delivered by incoming Secretary Dr. Sudeep Banerjee.
