World Breastfeeding Week Program Launched at PGIMS, Rohtak

Rohtak, August 1, 2026: The World Breastfeeding Week program was inaugurated on Saturday at the College of Nursing, Pt. Bhagwat Dayal Sharma University of Health Sciences.
Prof. Sunita Kumari, Dean and Principal of the College of Nursing, presided over the event, which is scheduled to run until August 7. Dr. Savita Singhal, Dean of Student Welfare, attended as the chief guest, while Dr. Manjunath, In-charge of the Public Relations Department, was present as the guest of honor.
Highlighting this year's theme, Dr. Savita Singhal stated that breastfeeding is not merely a child's right but the foundation of a healthy society. She noted that initiating breastfeeding within one hour of birth and providing exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months is the most effective and cost-efficient way to reduce infant mortality and illness. Urging nursing students to become "breastfeeding ambassadors," she encouraged them to visit hospitals and communities to educate mothers and families about proper breastfeeding techniques.
Presiding the event, Prof. Sunita Kumari mentioned that Breastfeeding Week has been observed annually from August 1 to 7 since the 1990 Innocenti Declaration, in collaboration with the WHO and UNICEF.
Dr. Manjunath remarked that breastfeeding can be promoted only through awareness and effective communication. He called upon students to spread awareness via social media, health education sessions, and community outreach.
The inaugural session featured a poster competition, health education sessions, and awareness talks on the benefits of breastfeeding. Winners of the poster competition were awarded prizes. Nursing students also performed a street play to raise awareness about the importance of early breastfeeding initiation and the role of colostrum in developing immunity in infants.
