Mohali, July 4, 2022: A woman underwent a successful lobectomy surgery at Ivy Hospital, Mohali recently where part of her lung that contained fungus was removed.

She had suddenly started coughing out blood and was immediately referred to the Ivy Hospital where Dr Suresh Goyal, senior pulmonology specialist, investigated her. He found a fungal ball in the woman's right lung which was causing the bleeding.

She was then immediately referred to Dr Harinder Singh Bedi, Director of Cardio Thoracic Sciences who realised that the only option was a surgery as the fungus of this size could not be treated medically as it could be fatal.

Dr Bedi informed that lobectomy, which is a major surgery, requires specialised skills and equipment and even a special anesthesia tube which can ventilate only one lung. A special technique Bedi-IMA buttress was used to prevent a dreaded complication known as broncho-pleural fistula. This technique has been published and accepted as a lifesaving method, asserted Dr Bedi who has trained in advanced lung surgery in Australia where he worked earlier.

Meanwhile, the patient did well after the surgery and is normal now.
