Chandigarh, February 9, 2022: The Department of Library and Information Science, Panjab University, Chandigarh, successfully organized webinar on “Digital Transition and Media & Information Literacy” today in online mode. Dr. Shiv Kumar, Chairperson of the Department, initiated the Webinar welcoming the speaker and participants. Prof. Rupak Chakravarty, Co-coordinator of the Webinar, introduced the Resource Person and theme of the webinar.
Prof. H.P.S. Kalra, from Department of Library and Information Science, Punjabi University, Patiala was Resource Person. He highlighted the importance of information in present era and emphasized that information handling has become easier with many ICTs now available to users. Users are now becoming ‘prosumers’, both producers and users of digital content. On the contrary, the digital age has also brought several challenges and disturbing phenomena in the context of privacy and security of data or information, monopolization, commercialization and commodification of knowledge and information. He stated that in order to overcome the challenges of digital transition, Media and Information Literacy (MIL) is the need of the hour. He explained that to use technology(ies) wisely, and to take the benefit of knowledge and information, we need to develop/enhance the capacity of people for independent learning and critical thinking through MIL skills.
