War Veterans honour Kargil Heroes at PU
Panjab University Chandigarh today hosted a panel discussion by Kargil War veterans and a declamation competition finale to pay tributes to the bravery and indomitable spirit of the Indian military during the 1999 conflict.

Chandigarh, July 29, 2025: Panjab University Chandigarh today hosted a panel discussion by Kargil War veterans and a declamation competition finale to pay tributes to the bravery and indomitable spirit of the Indian military during the 1999 conflict.
The function was organised by the Department of Defence and National Security Studies, Panjab University, in collaboration with the Jammu Kashmir Study Centre and Nimbus Defence Academy at the PU’s English Department Auditorium to mark Kargil Vijay Diwas.
In her impressive address, PU Vice Chancellor, Prof. Renu Vig expressed profound gratitude towards the soldiers who laid down their lives for the nation's sovereignty and territorial integrity, and encouraged students to imbibe the values of discipline and courage.
Brig. K D Singh (Retd.), in his address, reflected on Operation Vijay, highlighting the extreme conditions faced by soldiers at the world’s highest battlefield. He emphasised Pakistan’s strategy to capture NH-1 to isolate Ladakh from Kashmir, and shared inspiring stories of Indian soldiers’ sacrifices.
In his address, Brig. RPS Khalon (Retd.) provided a historical and geopolitical context to the Kargil War. He discussed the strategic importance of the Kargil region, elaborated on the complexities of mountain warfare, and urged students interested in serving the nation to consider joining the armed forces.
Earlier, Chairperson of the Department of Defence and National Security Studies, Dr. Jaskaran Singh Waraich welcomed the distinguished guests, speakers, faculty members, and students. The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Prof. Simrat Kahlon, who stressed the significance of such commemorations in instilling patriotism and awareness about military service among the youth.
The final round of the declamation competition saw participation from students across schools, colleges, and institutions in the tri-city region. The finalists, selected over the previous two days, competed in front of a packed audience. The winners were awarded certificates, mementos, and cash prizes by the organisers.
