New Delhi, May 5 (IANS) Delhi Chief Minister, Rekha Gupta, on Tuesday visited the site of the devastating fire in Vivek Vihar that claimed nine lives and met with the grieving families affected by the incident.
The Chief Minister interacted with survivors and bereaved relatives, assuring them of full support from the Delhi government during this difficult time. Her visit comes days after the tragic blaze that shook the area and left nine people dead and several injured.
Earlier on Sunday, expressing deep sorrow over the incident, CM Gupta had said in a post on X, “The fire incident in a building in Vivek Vihar is extremely tragic. The loss of 9 lives in this accident has left me deeply distressed. Treatment of the injured in the accident is ongoing at the nearest hospital, and I pray for their swift recovery.”
Extending her condolences, she added, “I pray to God to grant them the strength to endure this difficult time.”
She also assured that authorities are closely monitoring the situation and providing all necessary assistance. “All senior officials of the local administration, DDMA, Delhi Fire Service, and Delhi Police are fully engaged with utmost promptness in relief and rescue operations,” she said.
The incident occurred early on Sunday morning when a massive fire broke out on the second floor of a four-storey residential building in Vivek Vihar at around 4 A.M. According to officials, 14 fire engines were rushed to the spot, and the blaze was brought under control by approximately 6 A.M.
During the rescue operation, around 15 people were evacuated from the building. While some sustained minor injuries and were shifted to Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital for treatment, nine people, including a toddler, lost their lives in the tragedy.
Police teams, along with fire and emergency services, responded swiftly after receiving information about the fire. A preliminary enquiry has confirmed the death toll, while further investigation into the cause of the fire is underway.
Local representatives, including BJP MLA Sanjay Goyal and councillor Pankaj Luthra, were also present at the site to oversee relief efforts, along with BJP Delhi unit President Virendra Sachdeva.
The Delhi government has reiterated its commitment to supporting the affected families and ensuring all possible relief measures in the aftermath of the tragedy.
