Chandigarh, August 29, 2026: Punjab BJP president Kewal Singh Dhillon today termed the visit by three BJP MPs from Delhi to the residence of Sajjan Kumar, a convict in a 1984 anti-Sikh riots case, to offer condolences as “deeply unfortunate and regrettable”.
Dhillon made it clear that the visit was made in a personal capacity and had nothing to do with the BJP as an organisation. He said the Punjab BJP strongly condemned the gesture.
He said Sajjan Kumar was the same person who had been convicted by a court and sentenced to life imprisonment in connection with the killing of innocent Sikhs during the 1984 riots. “Any expression of sympathy towards such a convict is tantamount to rubbing salt into the wounds of thousands of victim families who lost their loved ones in the carnage,” he said.
Dhillon said BJP national president Nitin Nabin had taken serious note of the incident, expressed his displeasure and reprimanded the three MPs. It shows the sensitivity of the BJP leadership towards the feelings of the victims of 1984.
He said while the Congress had, for decades, followed a policy of protecting and patronising those accused of the 1984 violence, the Narendra Modi government had taken steps to reopen the cases and facilitate justice through Special Investigation Teams, eventually bringing several accused to justice.
The Punjab BJP chief reiterated that the party had always stood “like a rock” with the families of the victims of the 1984 violence and would continue to do so.
“Our sympathy and solidarity are only with the victims and their families, who continue to live with the pain and trauma of that tragedy. There is no place for the perpetrators of the 1984 violence in our policy or politics,” Dhillon said.
