Vet Varsity inaugurates free awareness camp on milk adulteration

Ludhiana, July 12, 2023: College of Dairy Science and Technology (CODST), Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Ludhiana is organizing 'Milk Adulteration Evaluation and Awareness Camp' from 10th July to 15th August 2023. Dr. Inderjeet Singh, Vice Chancellor while inaugurating the camp said that as concerns about food safety and quality continue to mount, events like this camp will serve as reminders of the need for greater accountability within the dairy industry. By educating consumers with knowledge and promoting transparency, it is hoped that such initiatives will lead to improved milk quality standards and protect consumers from the dangers of adulterated milk. 

Dr. R. S. Sethi, Dean, College of Dairy Science & Technology said that the event is aimed to educate consumers about the importance of consuming pure and unadulterated milk while providing them with an opportunity to get their milk samples tested for adulteration, free of charge. The college received an overwhelming response from the consumers, with more than 100 samples submitted for evaluation on the first day of the camp. Dr Sethi informed that a team of CODST will be visiting various districts of Punjab to organize an awareness camp by highlighting the importance of sourcing of milk from trusted and reputed dairy farms and suppliers.

Dr Anju Boora Khatkar, Coordinator of the camp said that the testing will involve a series of evaluations to identify common adulterants such as water, starch, detergent, and urea, which are frequently added to milk to increase volume and profits for unscrupulous vendors.

Dr. J.P.S. Gill, Director of Research, highlighted the health risks associated with milk adulteration and its detrimental effects on consumer trust and the industry's reputation.
