Amritsar, January 6, 2023: The city's first successful venoarterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VA-ECMO) case was performed successfully at Ivy Hospital, Amritsar recently.

The 30 year old female suffering from carbon monoxide poisoning due to a LPG geyser was found unconscious by her family in the bathroom. She was shifted to a hospital in Tarn Taran before being shifted to Ivy Hospital.

Dr. Pankaj Goel, director-cardiovascular surgery who along with his team performed the procedure said that on admission the patient’s BP was very low and she was on heavy dosed of medicine to keep it up. Her heart functioning was just 15%. Without support she would have lived only for a few hours more. She was put on ECMO the same night by a team comprising of Dr Pankaj Goel, Dr Gurpreet Gill cardiac anesthetist & critical care specialist and Isha the  perfusionist.

The patient was kept on full ECMO support for five days. Her heart pumping started improving day 3 onwards. On day 5 she was weaned off ECMO successfully.

Dr Goel said that it is indeed a matter of pride that this state of the art treatment is now available in Amritsar.

Dr Pankaj is expert in doing difficult surgeries like aortic dissection, thoraco abdominal aneurysms and pulmonary thromboendarterectomy.

Meanwhile, VA-ECMO is a form of temporary mechanical circulatory support and simultaneous extracorporeal gas exchange for acute cardiorespiratory failure, informed.

It is a technique to support failing heart, lung or both organs, he asserted.

In this technique the patient’s blood is taken out of the body, circulated through the artificial heart and lung and pumped back into the body. It is used for conditions which temporarily affect the functioning of these organs.

During Covid waves it was extensively used in sick cases for lung support, maintained Dr Pankaj.
