Unique Workshop on Financial Awareness and Inclusion for Visually Impaired Persons

Chandigarh, May 28, 2023: Equal Opportunities Cell of Panjab University Chandigarh and The RCS Positive Abilities, in collaboration with the National Association for the Blind (NAB Delhi) organized a unique Workshop on Financial Awareness and Inclusion for Visually Impaired Persons in the Auditorium of the Department of Chemistry, Panjab University, Chandigarh. In the event,  around 100 visually impaired participated along with their teachers, parents, and volunteers. The program was made possible through the invaluable partnership of Union Bank of India. Officials from Union Bank of India provided comprehensive information on various services and innovative products tailored specifically for individuals with disabilities. They addressed attendees' queries and facilitated the on-the-spot opening of bank accounts, complete with all necessary facilities, for many visually impaired persons. The bank also introduced a groundbreaking accessible debit card called Union Sparsh, specially designed to cater to the needs of the visually impaired. The card features Braille dots for easy identification and a notch/cut to assist users in correctly inserting the card into ATMs and POS machines. It is crucial to note that individuals with disabilities often face barriers when accessing various facilities, such as internet banking and debit cards, from many banks. Given this scenario, this program holds immense value as it provides persons with disabilities with all the necessary banking facilities, along with comprehensive assistance, all in one place.

NAB Delhi set up an experience zone just outside the auditorium, showcasing the latest assistive technological devices available for the visually impaired. Life-changing technologies such as screen readers, Braille note-takers, and Smartphone apps were demonstrated, all of which have a profound impact on the lives of visually impaired individuals.

The program was honored by the presence of Madhvi Kataria, Director of Social Security, Government of Punjab, who served as the chief guest. The event was attended by Sanjeev Kumar, Regional Head from Union Bank of India, who spoke about the bank's initiatives aimed at empowering persons with disabilities. Additionally, J.S. Jayara, Principal of the Institute for the Blind, Sector-26 Chandigarh, Vinod Chada, President of NAB Chandigarh, and Ratan Govind Miglani, President of Rotary Chandigarh Shivalik, were also present.
