Dharamshala, August 18, 2026: Two back-to-back earthquake tremors shook Kangra and Chamba districts of Himachal Pradesh on Tuesday evening, triggering panic among residents. The tremors, occurring within a span of about 45 minutes, prompted people to rush out of homes, offices and shops and gather in open areas.
According to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS), the first earthquake, measuring 3.6 on the Richter scale, struck at 6:54 pm, with its epicentre near Kareri in the Dharamsala area at a shallow depth of 5 km. The second and stronger tremor, measuring 4.0, occurred at 7:40 pm, with its epicentre in the Kangra region near Kareri, also at a depth of 5 km.
The shallow depth of the earthquakes made the tremors particularly noticeable and caused considerable alarm among people in the affected areas.
No loss of life or damage to buildings or other property has been reported so far. The district administration and concerned agencies are monitoring the situation.
