Training Programme on “Research Methodology in Social Science Research” commences

Chandigarh, September 22, 2015: Two Week Training Programme on “Research Methodology in Social Science Research” organised by the ICSSR North-Western Regional Centre at the ICSSR Complex, Panjab University (PU), Chandigarh, commenced on Monday.  
The participants are young teachers and research scholars from various social science disciplines hailing from the North-West Region.
Professor Veer Singh, Emeritus Professor of Laws, Panjab University, in his Key-note Address highlighted that in knowledge society today, those with cutting edge dominate world polity.  Man’s natural curiosity urges him to learn by invitation, experience or speculation. Merely knowing is not enough. Applied research brings desirable change and here social science research is lacking.  It is the rigorous in the methodology of the social science research that would make it worthwhile for application.  Professor Ronki Ram, Honorary Director, ICSSR North-Western Regional Centre of the Regional Centre  highlighted the importance of such Research Methodology training workshops in social science research.  He wished that the research scholars would be
equipped with all the techniques after attending the workshop to pursue their research in right direction as research is connected with human struggle.  Social Science researches address phenomenon that are socially relevant. Hence they should acquire such skills to pursue research.
Dr. Latika Sharma, Associate Professor, Department of Education and Course Coordinator in her vote of thanks expressed gratitude to P.U. authorities and ICSSR NWRC for consistently working to maintain the standard of research methodology cause.  She hoped that the participants would benefit from the experts invited for the academic interactions. 
The Inaugural Session was followed by the technical session on ‘Meaning and Aspects of social Science Research’ by Professor S.L. Sharma and ‘Epistemological Issues in Social Science Research’ by Professor Bhupinder Brar former Dean University Instruction, Panjab University.
Deputy Director, ICSSR, North-Western Regional Centre, Dr. P.K. Saini welcomed the Chief Guest and participants. He appraised the participants about the various activities of the Regional Centre and the need of such Research Methodology Programmes because social science research is a complicated process. There is a need for proper orientation to produce research work of good quality. He also highlighted the utility of such training workshop in order to update the knowledge and skills of the social science faculty to become competent and effective teachers./ (SK Vyas, Jalandhar)
