Tandon welcomes CHB relief to thousands of families, thanks UT Administrator for his positive intervention

Chandigarh, September 18, 2026: Senior BJP leader and party National Council Member Sanjay Tandon has welcomed the Chandigarh Housing Board’s (CHB) decision approving a framework for need-based changes in independent dwelling units and installation of lifts in CHB flats and dwelling units, describing it as a major relief for thousands of families in Chandigarh.

Welcoming the decision, Tandon said the move is expected to benefit around 35,000 beneficiary families, providing direct and indirect relief to nearly 1.5 lakh people.

“The CHB’s approval of a clear framework for need-based changes will address a longstanding concern of CHB allottees while ensuring that modifications are carried out in a transparent manner and in accordance with prescribed safety norms,” Tandon said.

“I sincerely thank the Hon’ble Administrator, the Chandigarh Administration and the Chandigarh Housing Board for addressing an issue that has been a matter of concern for thousands of Chandigarh residents. Their positive intervention, particularly that of the UT Administrator, has brought hope and relief to families who have been waiting for a solution for years,” Tandon said.

“The decision to bring independent Chandigarh Housing Board (CHB) houses at par with marla houses under the Chandigarh Building Rules, 2017, for applicable development-control norms, is a significant step towards addressing the long-pending concerns of thousands of families,” he said.

Tandon said that the latest need-based changes provide much-needed flexibility to residents by allowing alteration and reconstruction of independent houses and, wherever applicable, demolition and complete reconstruction, subject to the requisite clearances. The provision to retain existing construction in cases where it exceeds the current ground coverage or FAR limits but was within the limits permitted under earlier CHB need-based orders will also provide considerable relief to homeowners.

Equally important is the permission for internal alterations, including the removal of non-load-bearing walls. The introduction of building-plan approvals through a self-certification/SOP mechanism is another welcome reform that can make the approval process simpler, faster and more transparent, he added.

“The decision to facilitate installation of lifts in CHB dwelling units is especially significant from the perspective of accessibility and the dignity of residents,” he added.

“Coming just before Diwali, this decision is indeed a special and meaningful gift for CHB flats and dwelling unit owners. It will help ease years of uncertainty and financial concerns faced by thousands of families,” he said.

Tandon also welcomed the decision of the CHB Board which has approved the installation of rooftop solar photovoltaic systems under the PM Surya-Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, with no prior approval or NOC required from CHB, subject to the scheme’s guidelines.
